Homegrown acoustic Americana and folk-rock songs, recorded in Woodstock, NY...

Country-rock band Cows and Thunder has released its fifth album, a stripped-down set of Americana recordings titled ‘Cabin Reverb.’ The new album marks a return to more acoustic, folk-rock styled songs.

“We definitely experimented a lot over the past year or two,” said the band’s singer-songwriter Steven Capozzola. “But I think we got that out of our system. I was listening to a lot of Neil Young records and thinking, ‘This is what I love. Let’s do something in our wheelhouse for a change.’”

The new album features a more sparse, stripped-down sound, anchored by hand drums and cajon from percussionist Robert Ramirez. Capozzola explains that the songs were built on simple percussion tracks. “We didn’t use loops and drum machines,” he said. “We went back to our roots, which is basically the three of us jamming in a room.”

Marking a further departure for the band, Capozzola said the songwriting and lyrical focus ran a bit darker and more political. “I typically like singalong, shuffley ditties. But some of these songs are more dreamy, and some of them might touch a bit more on daily life. Maybe there’s more focus on the lyrics this time around.”

The most fun the band had in the recording process, according to Capozzola, was recording some of the basic tracks live at the much-loved ‘Logstock’ house, in Woodstock, NY. Long an anchor for local musicians, Logstock has a “great vibe and room sound,” according to Capozzola.

While the band recorded more than a dozen songs, Capozzola said that the final seven tracks that made it onto the album represent a cohesive song cycle. “These are the best songs, obviously. But there’s something that flows well between them—they sort of come from the same mood and fit together stylistically.”

Capozzola thinks the album may be their best. “We weren’t trying to make some kind of bold statement or stunning departure. We just wanted the very best songs we had, and we wanted to make the kind of country-rock album that we’d want to listen to while driving or hanging out.”
